Registration bonus terms in Kenya: what to check first
A registration bonus is an offer tied to opening a new betting account. Before relying on one, check who is eligible, that identity and age checks come first, the wagering multiple and its base, the minimum odds, the expiry, any maximum win and the one-account rule. The terms, not the advert, decide what you can withdraw.

What is a registration bonus?
A registration bonus is an offer tied to opening a new account with a bookmaker. It may come as bonus cash, as a free bet with its own payout rules, or as a match on your first deposit. Whatever the form, the operator's terms decide who qualifies and what can ever be withdrawn.
The Gambling Control Act, 2025 leaves room for such offers. Section 74(1)(b) bans offers designed to induce people to gamble or to gamble more, yet s.74(3) says the section does not limit free bets and bonus bets offered in the ordinary course of business. The Act puts no figures on a bonus, so every number you meet comes from the terms.
Read those terms in a fixed order. The checks below follow the order in which a condition can stop a bonus from being paid at all.
This page does not list offers, compare operators or give bonus amounts from any named operator. It shows what to read, so that the terms on an operator's own page can be checked line by line.
Check 1: are you eligible for the offer?
The first condition comes from the Act. Section 72(3) requires an operator to obtain proof of age of majority before registering any player. The Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) r.92(1)(c) refer to persons under the age of eighteen years, and gambling is for adults of the age of majority, which in Kenya is eighteen.
The operator's own limits come next. Check whether the terms restrict the offer to new customers, to people who have never held an account with that operator, or to people who pass a location check. Anyone on the self-exclusion register is barred by L.N. 112 r.70(5) from opening a gambling account and from being sent promotions.
Confirm as well that the operator holds a licence. Section 36(3) of the Act obliges the holder of an online licence to show that licence on its platform. The regulator's published list at gra.go.ke names each licensed company, with columns headed Trading Name and DOMAINS.
Check 2: does verification come before the bonus?
Under the 2026 Regulations, verification comes first. L.N. 112 r.82(1) bars a licensee from letting anyone take part in online gambling without an identity check, a location check and an age assurance check. Under r.82(2) those checks use reliable, independent and electronically verifiable data sources before the account is activated and before any wagering deposit is received.
The checks return when money leaves the account. Regulation 82(3) requires the identity of any winner to be verified before winnings are paid. Section 70(6) of the Act requires proof of age of majority before a prize is remitted to a registered player.
False details carry a specific risk. Under s.72(5), a licensee that learns a person gave false information during registration must refuse to register that person, or must cancel the registration at once. If the registration is cancelled, the account that held the bonus goes with it.
Check 3: what must you stake, at what odds, and by when?
The money conditions decide whether a registration bonus can become cash. Read four lines together: the wagering requirement, the minimum odds, the expiry and any maximum win.
The wagering requirement is a multiple of the bonus, or of the bonus and the deposit, that you must stake before withdrawing. Illustrative example: 8 times a KES 300 bonus means KES 2,400 of bets, while 8 times a KES 300 bonus plus a KES 300 deposit means KES 4,800. The wagering requirement maths shows how the bookmaker margin turns that turnover into a cost.
Minimum odds decide which bets count toward the turnover, and a bet below the stated price may count for nothing. Look for two clocks in the expiry clause, one to use the bonus and one to finish the wagering. The guide to expiry and maximum win clauses explains both clocks and the cap on withdrawable winnings.
Check 4: one account per person
Section 72(1) of the Act lets a person play only if registered as a player and holding an account with that licensee. A registration offer adds its own limit. The terms may set it per person, per household, per phone number, per device or per payment method.
Opening a second account to take the same offer again breaks that clause. Read what the clause then allows the operator to do: void the bonus only, or the winnings from it as well. The page on when a bookmaker can cancel a bonus or winnings covers these clauses and the complaint route.

What may a registration bonus advert say?
A bonus advert is still a gambling advert. The Advertising Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 114) r.9(a) ban a call-to-action message. Regulation 9(g) bans false, misleading or deceptive messages likely to create an erroneous positive impression of gambling.
The Conduct Regulations add a disclosure duty. Under L.N. 112 r.22(4) a licensee must include in all promotional materials a clear statement that terms and conditions apply, and r.22(5) requires instructions on how and where to access those terms. If an advert names a bonus but its terms cannot be found, the headline is incomplete; the rules on advertising betting bonuses set out the rest.
What if the bonus is refused or removed?
Start with the operator. L.N. 112 r.9(2) gives every licensee's customer care centre the job of resolving complaints. Under r.9(2)(e), a matter unresolved after 72 hours, or one the complainant asks in writing to escalate, must be referred to the Authority.
Keep a copy of the terms as they stood on the day you registered. A dated copy shows which version of each clause applied to your account.
Questions readers ask
Do I need to verify my ID before getting a registration bonus?
You need to pass verification before you can gamble online at all. L.N. 112 r.82 requires identity, location and age assurance checks using reliable, independent and electronically verifiable data before an account is activated and before any wagering deposit is received. Identity is checked again before winnings are paid, under r.82(3), and that includes winnings from bonus play.
Can I get a registration bonus twice with the same bookmaker?
A registration offer is tied to a new account, and section 72(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 links play to a registered player holding an account with the licensee. The terms may limit the offer to one per person, household, phone number, device or payment method. Opening a second account to repeat the offer breaks that clause and can lead to the bonus being voided.
What is the minimum age for a registration bonus in Kenya?
Eighteen. Section 72(3) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires proof of age of majority before any player is registered, and the 2026 Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations (L.N. 112) r.92(1)(c) refer to persons under the age of eighteen years as the group licensees must keep out of gambling. A bonus offer cannot change that rule.
Can I withdraw a registration bonus straight away?
Only if the terms say so. Where a wagering requirement applies, a multiple of the bonus or of the bonus plus deposit must be staked first, often at minimum odds and within a deadline. A maximum win clause may also cap what can be withdrawn. Check whether asking for a withdrawal before the wagering is complete cancels the bonus.
What should a registration bonus advert show?
Under L.N. 112 r.22(4), all promotional materials must carry a clear statement that terms and conditions apply. The Advertising Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 114) r.8 require the licence number, a responsible gambling message and the licensee's contact details, and r.9 bans a call-to-action message and any false, misleading or deceptive message about gambling.
