Deposit match bonus: a worked example in shillings, from turnover to expected cost
In an illustrative 100% match, a KES 1,000 deposit brings KES 1,000 of bonus credit. A 10x rollover on the bonus means KES 10,000 of stakes at or above the minimum odds before withdrawal. At a 5% bookmaker margin, that turnover costs about KES 500 on average, half the bonus.

What does a 100% deposit match mean?
A deposit match adds bonus credit in proportion to the money you deposit. At 100%, the bonus equals the deposit, up to any cap the terms set. Bonus credit is not cash: the terms decide when it, or anything won with it, can leave your account.
The condition that does most of the work is the rollover, also called the wagering requirement. It says how many times the bonus must be staked before a withdrawal. The page on how wagering requirements are calculated covers the multiplier in general, while this page follows one offer through every sum.
Every figure below is an Illustrative example. No operator, real offer or advertised amount is described.
The illustrative terms
The example uses a set of terms of the kind printed on bonus pages. Change any line and the result moves, which is why each step is shown.
| Term | Illustrative value |
|---|---|
| Deposit | KES 1,000 |
| Match rate | 100% |
| Bonus credit | KES 1,000 |
| Rollover | 10 times the bonus |
| Minimum odds per qualifying bet | 1.50 |
| Time limit for the rollover | 14 days |
| Bets that count | Settled sports bets at or above the minimum odds |
Step 1: how much do you have to stake?
Turnover is the rollover multiplier times the amount it applies to. Illustrative example: 10 x KES 1,000 of bonus = KES 10,000 of qualifying stakes. That is ten times the bonus and, at a 100% match, ten times your deposit too.
Some terms apply the multiplier to the deposit and the bonus together. Illustrative example: 10 x (KES 1,000 + KES 1,000) = KES 20,000. One short phrase in the terms doubles the stakes required.
Turnover is a total of stakes, not of losses. You could reach KES 10,000 with 20 bets of KES 500 or 100 bets of KES 100. Section 71(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 sets the smallest online bet at twenty shillings, so the longest route is 500 bets of KES 20.
| Rollover | Base is the bonus only (KES 1,000) | Base is deposit plus bonus (KES 2,000) |
|---|---|---|
| 5x | KES 5,000 | KES 10,000 |
| 10x | KES 10,000 | KES 20,000 |
| 20x | KES 20,000 | KES 40,000 |
| 30x | KES 30,000 | KES 60,000 |
The wagering calculator runs this multiplication for any multiplier and amount you enter.
Step 2: what do the minimum odds change?
A bet priced below the minimum odds adds nothing to the turnover, even when it wins. Here a single at 1.45 counts for zero and a single at 1.50 counts in full. The guide to the minimum odds rule in bonus terms explains how the floor applies to accumulators.
The odds floor also sets how often a qualifying bet loses. Implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal odds, so 1.50 implies 66.7%. Before any margin, a single at 1.50 loses about one time in three.
Accumulators lift the odds quickly. Four legs at 1.50 multiply to odds of 5.06, and the implied chance that all four win drops to 19.75%. Roughly four in five such accumulators lose, so the balance can run dry long before the turnover is reached.
Step 3: what does the turnover cost on average?
Bookmaker odds carry a margin, known as the overround. It equals the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market added together, minus 100%. A two-way market priced 1.90 and 1.90 adds up to 105.26%, an overround of 5.26%.
Illustrative example: if each side truly has a 50% chance, a KES 100 bet at 1.90 pays back KES 95 on average. The expected cost is KES 5 per KES 100 staked, or 5% of turnover. Multiply that rate by the turnover and you have the average price of clearing the bonus.
Illustrative example: KES 10,000 x 5% = KES 500. On average the KES 1,000 bonus is then worth about KES 500, before any cap or deadline bites. With the multiplier on deposit plus bonus, KES 20,000 x 5% = KES 1,000, and the average value of the bonus falls to nothing.
| Scenario | Turnover | Average return per KES 100 staked | Expected cost | Average bonus value left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10x bonus, singles, 5% margin | KES 10,000 | KES 95.00 | KES 500 | KES 500 |
| 10x deposit plus bonus, singles, 5% margin | KES 20,000 | KES 95.00 | KES 1,000 | KES 0 |
| 20x bonus, singles, 5% margin | KES 20,000 | KES 95.00 | KES 1,000 | KES 0 |
| 10x bonus, four-leg accumulators, 95% return per leg | KES 10,000 | KES 81.45 | KES 1,855 | minus KES 855 |
The last row shows why the bet type matters. The margin is charged on each leg, so four legs returning 95% each give 0.95 x 0.95 x 0.95 x 0.95, about 81.45% of the stake on average. The same KES 10,000 of turnover then costs about KES 1,855, more than the bonus is worth.
Why one attempt rarely looks like the average
The expected cost is an average across many attempts. A single attempt ends one of two ways: the turnover is finished with some balance left, or the balance hits zero first. The average sits between those outcomes and describes neither of them.
Whether your own KES 1,000 is exposed depends on the order the terms set. Terms can spend cash first and bonus credit after, or lock the deposit together with the bonus until the rollover is done. Read that clause before the multiplier, because it decides what a losing run takes from you.
Two more clauses cut the result. If the terms carry a deadline, unfinished turnover when it passes can mean the bonus and its winnings are removed, and a maximum win clause caps what can be withdrawn. The guide to bonus expiry and maximum win clauses shows how to read both.
How to run the same check on any bonus page
- Find the multiplier and note its base: the bonus alone, or deposit plus bonus.
- Multiply the two to get the turnover in shillings.
- Note the minimum odds and whether an accumulator counts by its combined odds or by each leg.
- Multiply the turnover by a margin read from real odds, such as 5% for a market priced 1.90 and 1.90.
- Compare that expected cost with the bonus, then check the deadline and any cap on winnings.
What does Kenyan law say about deposit match offers?
The Gambling Control Act, 2025 does not use the words deposit match, rollover or wagering requirement. Section 72(7) bars a licensee from inducing a bet by advancing credit, and its proviso excludes free bets and bonus bets conducted in the ordinary course of business.
Section 74(1)(b) bars a licensee from making an offer designed to induce people to take part, or to take part more, in licensed activities. Breach is an offence under section 74(2), punishable by a fine of up to five million shillings, up to five years in prison, or both. Section 74(3) adds that nothing in the section limits free bets and bonus bets offered in the ordinary course of business.
The Act also keeps credit out of the stake. Section 73(3) lets a licensee accept a wager only when the player's account holds enough funds to cover it and the player has approved those funds.
The Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) add rules on terms. Regulation 22(2) wants bookmaking terms in simple language that state all significant conditions that may affect a punter's decision, and regulation 22(4) makes promotional material say that terms and conditions apply. Under regulation 22(6) the terms may not be amended or varied without the Authority's prior approval.
Regulation 23 of the same Regulations requires odds, rules and terms to be clearly displayed for each bet. It also bars a licensee from altering the terms of a bet after accepting it, except as the Act and the Regulations permit.
How tax touches a deposit match
Excise duty on betting is charged on deposits rather than stakes. The Kenya Revenue Authority's notice on the Finance Act, 2025 shows the rate in force from 1 July 2025. Betting moved from 15% of the amount wagered or staked to 5% of the amount deposited into a customer's betting wallet.
The Finance Act, 2026 changed the wording from 1 July 2026. Section 36(b) of that Act makes paragraph 4A of the First Schedule to the Excise Duty Act refer to the amount deposited for betting purposes. Section 36(c) defines that amount as money or money's worth made available for betting, whether provided by a player or the operator.
The worked figures above leave tax out, so read them as the cost before tax. The guide to tax on bonus and free bet winnings covers withholding on withdrawals and the deposit side in detail.
What this example does not cover
This is arithmetic, not a view on any offer. Real terms differ in the multiplier, the base, the odds floor, the excluded markets and the deadline, so the same method gives different answers.
A bonus does not remove the margin from any qualifying bet. Gambling is not a way to earn income or clear debts. If a bonus tempts you to deposit more than you planned, the page on help with gambling and setting limits lists the tools available and the regulator's helpline.
Questions readers ask
How do you calculate the turnover on a deposit bonus?
Multiply the rollover by the amount it applies to. Illustrative example: a 10x rollover on a KES 1,000 bonus means KES 10,000 of qualifying stakes. If the terms apply it to deposit plus bonus, the same 10x on KES 2,000 means KES 20,000. Only bets at or above the minimum odds count, and only within the time limit the terms set.
What is the expected cost of clearing a deposit match bonus?
Multiply the turnover by the bookmaker's margin. In a market priced 1.90 and 1.90 the overround is 5.26%, and a bet with a true 50% chance returns about KES 95 per KES 100 staked. Illustrative example: KES 10,000 of turnover at that margin costs about KES 500 on average. That figure is an average over many attempts, not the result of any single one.
Why do accumulators make a bonus more expensive to clear?
The margin applies to every leg, so it compounds. Illustrative example: with a 95% return per leg, a four-leg accumulator returns 0.95 to the power of four, about 81.45% of the stake on average. KES 10,000 of turnover then costs about KES 1,855, which is more than a KES 1,000 bonus. Singles at the minimum odds cost less per shilling staked.
Are deposit match bonuses legal in Kenya?
The Gambling Control Act, 2025 allows free bets and bonus bets in the ordinary course of business, under the proviso to section 72(7) and under section 74(3). Section 74(1)(b) still bars offers designed to induce people to gamble or to gamble more. Regulation 22 of the 2026 Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations requires the terms to use simple language and state all significant conditions.
Does excise duty apply to bonus credit in Kenya?
Section 36(c) of the Finance Act, 2026 defines the amount deposited for betting excise as money or money's worth made available for betting, whether provided by a player or the operator. That definition applies from 1 July 2026. The rate shown by the Kenya Revenue Authority since 1 July 2025 is 5% of the amount deposited, in place of the earlier 15% of stakes.
