Bonus expiry and maximum win clauses: the clock, the cap and what you forfeit

An expiry clause sets how long you have to use a bonus and finish its wagering; when it runs out, the bonus and any winnings still tied to it are removed. A maximum win clause caps how much of the winnings from bonus money you can withdraw. Both are operator terms, not figures set by Kenyan law.

What do expiry and maximum win clauses do?

Two limits in most bonus terms decide how much of an offer you keep. The expiry clause is a time limit on using the bonus and on finishing its wagering. The maximum win clause is a ceiling on the cash you can take out of it.

Neither limit is a figure in the Gambling Control Act, 2025 or in the 2026 Regulations as gazetted. Each operator picks its own, and both work alongside the turnover rule set out in the explainer on wagering requirements. A short clock on top of a large turnover is the hardest pairing to complete.

Which clocks run on a bonus?

One offer can run on up to three separate clocks, and the terms often give each one its own length. Read them as separate lines, even when they sit in the same paragraph.

The time limits found in bonus terms
ClockTypical start point (check your terms)What you lose when it runs out
Opt-in windowThe offer goes live, or your account is openedThe right to take up the offer
Use windowThe bonus or free bet is creditedAn unused free bet or bonus balance
Wagering windowThe bonus is credited, or the first qualifying bet is placedThe bonus balance and any winnings still locked to it

The clocks can overlap. A free bet might have to be used within seven days, while the winnings it produces face a fresh wagering window counted from the day they are credited.

How do you read the clock?

Three details fix the real deadline: what starts the clock, the unit it counts in, and where it ends. A missing detail is a question for customer care before you opt in.

  1. Find the start event. It can be registration, the deposit, the moment the bonus is credited, or your first bet.
  2. Note the unit. "7 days" and "168 hours" do not always end at the same moment.
  3. Look for an end time of day and the time zone the terms use.
  4. Check what counts as finishing. Some terms count a bet only once it is settled, so a bet on a match that ends after the deadline would not count.
  5. Write down the expiry shown in the bonus section of your account as soon as the bonus is credited.
Illustrative example: a bonus credited at 14:00 on Tuesday 3 November 2026, valid for "7 days"
How the terms countBonus endsTime available
Seven periods of 24 hours14:00, Tuesday 10 November 2026168 hours
Seven calendar days, credit day counted as day 123:59, Monday 9 November 2026About 154 hours
Seven calendar days, counting from the next day23:59, Tuesday 10 November 2026About 178 hours

In this illustrative example the three readings differ by about a day. If the terms do not say which one applies, plan for the earliest end time.

What does a maximum win clause cap?

A maximum win clause, also called a winnings cap or maximum withdrawal, sets the most you can cash out from winnings produced by bonus money. Anything above the cap is taken off the balance, usually when the bonus converts to cash or when you request a withdrawal.

The cap can be a fixed shilling figure, or a multiple of the bonus such as five times the free bet value. It can apply per bet or to the whole offer. It may cover only winnings from bonus funds, or your whole balance while a bonus is active, so check which balance the wording names.

Illustrative example: a KES 500 free bet, stake not returned, under two kinds of cap
OddsWinnings (stake not returned)CapYou keepRemoved
4.00KES 1,500Fixed, KES 5,000KES 1,500KES 0
21.00KES 10,000Fixed, KES 5,000KES 5,000KES 5,000
21.00KES 10,000Five times the free bet, KES 2,500KES 2,500KES 7,500

The winnings column follows the stake-not-returned rule explained in the guide to how a free bet pays out: KES 500 at 21.00 returns KES 10,500, less the KES 500 free stake. In this illustrative example a long-odds win loses half or more of its value to the cap.

Tax is a separate step that comes after the cap. The guide to tax on winnings from a free bet or bonus covers what is deducted when the kept amount is withdrawn.

What is forfeiture?

Forfeiture is the word bonus terms use for removing a bonus balance or bonus winnings. It happens when a clock runs out with wagering unfinished, when winnings pass a cap, or when another condition is broken.

The key question is what else the clause takes with it. Look for a line saying whether your own deposit, and the winnings from it, stay in the account when the bonus goes. If the wording leaves that open, get the answer in writing before you deposit.

Cancellation on other grounds, such as a duplicate account, follows different rules, set out in the guide on whether a bookmaker can cancel a bonus or your winnings.

What does Kenyan law say about these clauses?

The law regulates the terms, not the length of a bonus clock or the size of a cap. Regulation 4(1) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) requires a licensee to submit its terms and conditions to the Authority for approval. Regulation 4(2)(i) lists "odds, lottery rules, and limits" among the matters those terms must cover.

Regulation 22(2)(b) of L.N. 112 requires a bookmaker's terms to state all significant conditions that may affect a punter's decision. Regulation 22(3) keeps the terms readily accessible to the public for the duration of play, and regulation 22(4) requires a clear statement that terms and conditions apply in all promotional materials.

Changing a clock or a cap is restricted too, because regulation 22(6) requires the Authority's prior approval for any amendment of the terms. Adverts for an offer fall under the Gambling Control (Advertising) Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 114), whose regulation 9(g) bans false, misleading or deceptive messages likely to create an erroneous positive impression of gambling. Under regulation 70(5) of L.N. 112, a person on the self-exclusion register may not receive promotions from a licensee at all.

Which time limits does the law set on winnings?

The statutory clocks are written for winnings, prizes and account balances, and most of them run against the operator. None of them mentions a bonus balance, so do not read them as stopping a bonus from expiring.

A short check before you opt in

  • How long is each clock, and what starts it?
  • Must bets be settled before the deadline, or only placed?
  • Is there a cap, and is it a fixed sum or a multiple of the bonus?
  • Does the cap cover bonus winnings only, or the whole balance?
  • What is removed at expiry, and does your own deposit stay?

Work out the full turnover in the wagering calculator, then divide it by the days on the clock. Illustrative example: KES 7,000 of turnover in seven days means staking KES 1,000 a day, and if that is more than you would bet anyway, the clock is the real cost of the offer.

Questions readers ask

What happens when a bonus expires before the wagering is finished?

The bonus balance is removed, and so are any winnings still locked to it. Whether your own deposit and the winnings from it stay in the account depends on the wording of the forfeiture clause. Note the expiry date shown in your account when the bonus is credited, and check whether bets must be settled, or only placed, before that time.

Is a maximum win cap on bonus winnings allowed in Kenya?

The Gambling Control Act, 2025 and the 2026 Regulations as gazetted neither set nor ban a cap on bonus winnings. They regulate the terms instead. Regulation 22(2)(b) of L.N. 112 requires a bookmaker's terms to state all significant conditions that may affect a punter's decision, and regulation 22(6) requires the Authority's prior approval before the terms are amended.

Does a maximum win cap also apply to winnings from my own deposit?

It depends on the wording. A cap may apply only to winnings produced by a free bet or bonus funds, or to the whole balance while a bonus is active. If the clause does not draw that line clearly, ask customer care in writing which balance is capped, and keep the reply, before you place any bet with the bonus.

How do I work out when a bonus marked "7 days" ends?

Find the start event first, such as the time the bonus was credited. Then check whether the terms count seven periods of 24 hours or seven calendar days, and whether they name an end time. Illustrative example: a bonus credited at 14:00 on a Tuesday ends at 14:00 the following Tuesday under the 24-hour reading.

How quickly must a bookmaker pay winnings that are not capped?

Section 70(1) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires monetary online winnings to be credited to the player's account within two days. The Third Schedule to L.N. 112 sets payment tiers, with online prizes up to KES 500,000 paid immediately after basic identity checks. A licensee that has not paid within 14 days faces a penalty under regulation 101.
