What is a free bet and how does it pay out in Kenya?
A free bet is a stake that the bookmaker credits to your account for one bet. Where the terms say stake not returned, a winning free bet pays only the profit: the stake times the odds, minus the stake. Minimum odds, an expiry date and other conditions in the terms decide what it is worth.

What is a free bet?
A free bet is a stake that a bookmaker credits to your account for one bet. You pick the selection, and the operator supplies the stake. If the bet loses, the stake is gone, but it was never your own cash.
The cost of a free bet sits elsewhere. It sits in whatever the terms asked you to do to receive it, and in the conditions attached to it.
The phrase that decides the payout is stake not returned (SNR). Under that rule a winning free bet pays the profit only. The stake itself is not paid back to you.
Is a free bet allowed under Kenyan law?
Section 72(7) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 bars a licensee from inducing or helping a player to bet by advancing credit, allowing credit cards or meeting third party costs. A proviso follows. It says the rule "shall not apply to free bets and bonus bets conducted in the ordinary course of business".
Section 74(1)(b) of the same Act forbids a licensee to "make an offer designed to induce persons to participate or increase their participation in licensed activities". Section 74(3) then says nothing in that section limits an operator from offering free bets and bonus bets in the ordinary course of business.
The Act does not define a free bet. It sets no minimum odds, no expiry and no payout rule for one, so the detail lives in the operator's own terms.
How does a free bet pay out?
With stake not returned, the payout on a win is the stake times the decimal odds, minus the stake. As a formula, payout = stake × (odds - 1).
Illustrative example: a KES 100 free bet on a selection at odds of 3.00 wins. A KES 100 cash bet at the same odds would return KES 300, and KES 100 of that is your own stake coming back. The free bet pays KES 200, which is the profit part only.
Some terms describe a stake returned free bet instead, where the payout includes the stake. That version pays exactly one stake more on every winning bet. Look for the words "stake not returned", "SNR" or "winnings exclude stake" before you place it.
| Decimal odds | Implied chance (1 ÷ odds) | Pays, stake not returned (KES) | Pays, stake returned (KES) | Average value at fair odds, stake not returned (KES) | Average value at fair odds, stake returned (KES) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 66.7% | 50 | 150 | 33 | 100 |
| 2.00 | 50.0% | 100 | 200 | 50 | 100 |
| 3.00 | 33.3% | 200 | 300 | 67 | 100 |
| 5.00 | 20.0% | 400 | 500 | 80 | 100 |
| 10.00 | 10.0% | 900 | 1,000 | 90 | 100 |
The two value columns are averages, not forecasts. They assume the odds match the true chance of the outcome, which real prices do not, because every price carries a bookmaker margin. On any single bet the result is either the full payout or nothing.
Why does the value of an SNR free bet change with the odds?
The pattern follows from the formula. At odds of 1.50 the free bet pays KES 50 about two times in three, so its average value at fair odds is about KES 33. At odds of 10.00 it pays KES 900 one time in ten, an average of KES 90.
A stake returned free bet behaves like cash, so at fair odds its average value is KES 100 at any price. This is arithmetic about averages, not advice on which odds to take. Longer odds also mean losing the whole free bet far more often.
The bookmaker margin pulls every figure down. Implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal odds, and the overround is the sum of those probabilities across a market minus 100%. On a two-way market priced 1.90 and 1.90 the overround is 5.26%, so a free bet on either side is worth less than the fair figures above.
Which terms decide what a free bet is worth?
The Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) r.23(1) require a licensee to clearly display the odds, rules and terms that apply to each bet. Five conditions in those terms change the arithmetic.
- Minimum odds. The free bet may only be placed at or above a stated price, and on an accumulator the price may apply to each leg or to the combined odds. The minimum odds rule in bonus terms explains what happens to bets below the line.
- Expiry. A free bet not placed by the stated date and time lapses. Check when the clock starts and which time zone the terms use.
- Single use. Check whether the whole stake must go on one bet, and whether any part left unused is lost.
- Markets. The terms may limit the free bet to certain sports, markets or bet types, and may exclude cash out.
- Maximum win. A cap on winnings cuts off the top rows of the table above. The guide to bonus expiry and maximum win clauses covers caps and lapses in detail.
One more condition can apply after a win. Some terms pay free bet winnings as bonus funds that must be staked again before withdrawal, so a KES 200 win is not always KES 200 you can withdraw. The rules on wagering requirements and rollover show how that turnover is counted.
How is a free bet different from bonus cash?
Bonus cash is a balance rather than a single stake. Terms for bonus cash may let you spread it across several bets and pay the stake back with any winnings. The whole balance then waits behind a wagering requirement.
A free bet is a fixed stake for one bet, and under SNR the bookmaker keeps the stake on a win. The two can look alike on an account screen, so read which one the terms describe.
| Question | Free bet | Bonus cash |
|---|---|---|
| How is it credited? | A fixed stake for one bet | A balance in shillings that can fund several bets |
| What does a win pay? | Profit only, where the terms say stake not returned | Stake and profit, credited as the terms set out |
| Is wagering attached? | Check the terms; it may apply to the winnings | Check the multiple and the amount it is applied to |
| Can the credit itself be withdrawn? | No, only winnings, as the terms allow | Only after the wagering and any cap |
| What ends it early? | Expiry, or a bet that breaks the minimum odds or market rules | Expiry of the wagering period, or any action the terms say forfeits it |
What the law and the tax rules add
Three rules in L.N. 112 apply once a free bet is placed. Regulation 23(2) bars a licensee from altering the terms of a bet after accepting it, and r.24(1) requires winning bets to be settled promptly under the published rules. Regulation 22(6) adds that the terms and conditions a bookmaker submits under that regulation may not be amended or varied without the Authority's prior approval.
Section 70(1) of the Act requires a monetary prize won online to be credited to the player's account within two days. The bonus terms then decide whether that credit is cash you can withdraw or bonus funds.
Tax has its own rule for stakes the operator provides. From 1 July 2026, the Finance Act, 2026 s.36(c)(ii) defines the excise "amount deposited" as money or money's worth made available for betting to a licensee, "whether provided by a player or the operator". How that rule and withholding on withdrawals affect a winning free bet is set out in tax on winnings from a free bet.
A person entered in the self-exclusion register may not receive promotions or marketing material from a licensee, under L.N. 112 r.70(5)(c). The same regulation bars that person from placing a bet or claiming gambling winnings.
What this guide does not cover
This page explains how a free bet works. It does not list offers, quote amounts from named operators or give codes, and it does not suggest bets.
Before using a free bet from any operator, check that the operator appears on the regulator's list of licensed companies at gra.go.ke. Section 36(3) of the Act also requires an online licensee to display its licence on its platform.
Questions readers ask
What does stake not returned mean on a free bet?
It means the free bet stake is not paid back when the bet wins. You receive only the profit, which is the stake times the decimal odds minus the stake. Illustrative example: a KES 100 free bet at odds of 2.50 wins and pays KES 150, while a KES 100 cash bet at the same odds would return KES 250 including your own KES 100.
Can I withdraw a free bet without betting it?
A free bet is credited as a stake for betting, not as cash, so it has no withdrawable value of its own. Only winnings from it can become withdrawable, and only as the terms allow. Some terms credit those winnings as bonus funds that must be wagered first, and a free bet left unused lapses at its expiry date and time.
Are free bets legal in Kenya?
The Gambling Control Act, 2025 allows them. Section 72(7) bans inducing bets through credit, credit cards or meeting a player's costs, but its proviso excludes free bets and bonus bets conducted in the ordinary course of business. Section 74(3) says the ban on inducements in section 74 does not limit an operator from offering free bets and bonus bets in that ordinary course.
What happens if I place a free bet below the minimum odds?
The terms decide. Depending on the wording, the bet slip may refuse the free bet, or the bet may stand without using or counting toward the offer. Read the minimum odds line before placing the bet, and on an accumulator check whether the price applies to each leg or only to the combined odds of the whole slip.
Is a free bet the same as bonus cash?
No. A free bet is one fixed stake, and where the terms say stake not returned, a win pays the profit only. Bonus cash is a balance that can fund several bets, and its winnings normally stay behind a wagering requirement until the turnover is done. Both are set by the operator's terms, so check which one an offer describes.
