Rollover in betting bonuses: meaning and one example

Rollover is the number of times you must stake a bonus, and sometimes the deposit with it, before the bonus or its winnings can be withdrawn. Illustrative example: a 5x rollover on a KES 400 bonus means KES 2,000 of qualifying bets. The same condition is also called a wagering requirement.

Key facts

Rollover in the Gambling Control Act, 2025Word not used; the Act refers to free bets and bonus bets (s.72(7) proviso, s.74(3))October 20261

Rollover is the total you must bet, written as a multiple of a bonus, before the bonus or money won with it can be withdrawn. A 5x rollover asks for five times the bonus value in qualifying bets. Bonus pages also call it a wagering requirement or playthrough.

How the multiplier is applied

The multiplier always comes with a base. Some terms count the bonus alone, others the deposit plus the bonus, and on a 100% match the second base doubles what you must stake. Only qualifying bets move the total, which usually means a minimum odds level, settled bets and a deadline.

Rollover adds up stakes, not losses. A bet that wins still counts its stake toward the total, exactly as a losing one does.

One example in shillings

Illustrative example: a KES 400 bonus carries a 5x rollover and minimum odds of 1.60. You need 5 x KES 400 = KES 2,000 staked on bets priced at 1.60 or above. Four bets of KES 500 at 1.60 would complete it, while a KES 500 bet at 1.40 would add nothing.

The wagering calculator repeats this sum for any bonus. The guide to wagering requirements explained with maths shows what such a turnover costs once the bookmaker's margin is counted.

Rollover and Kenyan law

The Gambling Control Act, 2025 never uses the word rollover. It refers to free bets and bonus bets in the proviso to section 72(7) and in section 74(3), which leave operators free to offer them in the ordinary course of business.

Regulation 22(2)(b) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 asks bookmaking terms to set out every significant condition that could sway a punter's choice to take part. A rollover decides when bonus money can leave the account, so look for it there before you accept. A full offer is worked through in the deposit match bonus example in shillings.

Questions readers ask

Is rollover the same as a wagering requirement?

Yes. Rollover, wagering requirement and playthrough name one condition: a multiple of the bonus, or of the deposit plus the bonus, that you must stake before a withdrawal. The label changes from one bonus page to another, so check which base the multiplier uses. On a 100% match, 5x on the bonus alone asks for half the stakes of 5x counted on deposit plus bonus.

Do losing bets count toward rollover?

In the usual wording, yes. Rollover totals the stakes of qualifying bets whatever their result, provided each bet meets the minimum odds and settles before the deadline. Cancelled or void bets may be left out, and the terms list any excluded bets. Read the qualifying bet clause beside the multiplier, because it decides which stakes move the total.
